On 9/11 a local blood center outlines the importance of donating blood

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) — In the days following terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, thousands of donors lined up to donate at various blood centers and Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin wants to bring the same sentiment to 2019.

The blood center’s Marshfield location accepted donations from 6 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesday to give on the tragic anniversary.

Tragic events like 9/11 often come without warning.

“You can never prepare or know when there is going to be, and the blood that we would need for a tragedy today would’ve had to have been previously donated a few days ago. So it’s extraordinarily important to keep the supply up,” said Becky Brown of Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin.

Every person who donates will receive a special remembrance card detailing the story of a victim of the tragic attacks.

A partnering mobile blood drive will also be taking place Wednesday in Wisconsin Rapids at Mid-State Technical College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
