Cabin destroyed in Portage Co. fire

TOWN OF LANARK, Wis. (WAOW) — Several emergency crews responded to a structure fire in the Town of Lanark on Wednesday morning.

According to Amherst Fire District’s Assistant Chief Brian Swan, a driver thought they were driving through fog when it was quickly realized a structure was on fire behind several trees.

Asst. Chief Brian Swan said the department wasn’t able to pinpoint an exact cause, but weather could be to blame for the blaze.

“I did make a call to NOAA in Green Bay and they did confirm that there were many lightning strikes in the area but we can’t confirm that it was caused by lightning because the power was still connected to the house,” Asst. Chief Brian Swan added.

He said the house was unoccupied, and without such a quick response from neighboring departments the fire could have easily spread to trees in the surrounding area.
