Tips from area experts on a healthy sleep schedule

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — As students are getting back in the groove of going to school, officials at North Central Health Care in Wausau are reminding parents and students of the importance of a healthy sleep schedule.

Experts say it’s important to get at least eight to nine hours of sleep, or the lack of can affect performance in the classroom.

“They tend to fall asleep during class,” Dr. Dia Arpon with North Central Health Care said. “They usually have harder times learning and retaining information, and also they have dysregulation of their mood.”

She also said lack of sleep can affect the growth and development of kid’s minds, also leading to irritability and attention deficit disorder.

“According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, for each hour that you don’t get sleep, your grades can drop by 20 points,” Dr. Arpon stated. “It’s also important to sleep with your TV off because that can still stimulate your brain, meaning you’re not getting the full rest.”
