Athlete of the Week: Newman Catholic’s Ben Bates

The Newman Catholic High School football team started their season off strong last Friday with a 53-21 win over Oakfield.

A large part of that win was because of senior quarterback Ben Bates. There’s no doubt Bates is a talented player.

“He knows before I even have to say something,” said Paul Michlig, Newman Catholic’s Head Coach. “Where it’s going to go and where it’s going to be, who’s going to be open and why we are running that play.”

Last Friday night, Bates threw for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for another 75 yards and 2 touchdowns.

“Getting that ‘W’ on Friday night, that’s our goal,” Bates said. “Just taking it one week at a time and really enjoying it too. It’s my last season. You only get this once.”

Bates was named the 8-Player Football Offensive Player of the Year last season. Even with that title, he used the off-season to perfect his skill.

“Focus on the little stuff and get better that way,” Bates said. “Foot work and everything, throwing techniques, just the little stuff. I really focused on getting better and it seems to be paying off.”

However, what most people don’t know is that Bates also excels off the field.

“I’ve been playing cello since I was about four and it’s something I really enjoy,” Bates said. “I spend a lot of time at it, so I’ve gotten pretty good over the years.”

Bates is still debating his post high school career. There’s no doubt his future is bright though.

“He’s going to be doing something when he gets to school with music too,” Michlig said. “So he really has to find the right school and I know he;s going through the process. He has visited some colleges during the summer here for football. It’ll be a process and hopefully by the time it’s November, we’ll know where he’s going.”
