Legionnaires’ outbreak reported at Tomahawk hotel

Tomahawk (WAOW) — A legionnaires’ outbreak forced a Tomahawk hotel to close mid-August.

According to the health department, two people contracted the severe form of pneumonia at the Rodeway Inn & Suites.

The minimum requirement to be classified as an outbreak is considered two people within one year.

The hotel closed for almost a week but reopened August 20 with new filters.

“In the meantime, guests are notified that there still is legionella,” says Lincoln Co. Health Department Director Shelley Hersil. “It’s being filtered out of the faucets and the shower heads but it still is in the water system.”

The Lincoln County Health Department says it’s the first case they’ve seen. There were 334 cases of legionnaires’ in 2018 in Wisconsin.

The health department says the hotel is working on a water management plan. Managers from the hotel did not return our request for comment.
