Stevens Point residents express concerns about potential courthouse move

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) — Earlier this year, it was announced the the Portage County Courthouse could be moved from its Downtown Stevens Point location. But that potential move, is causing concern for some.

At a Monday night Stevens Point Finance Committee meeting, Portage County leaders said the current facilities have infrastructure issues and that new facilities are needed. A location on the east side of town is being looked at as an option for building a new court house, but officials said the plan is still conceptual.

But many Stevens Point residents at the meeting expressed concern that moving the courthouse out of downtown could have a negative impact on the city’s economy.

“The economy of our downtown and our city will surely suffer,” said on resident who spoke at the meeting. “In addition to the hundreds of jobs that would leave the downtown, the livelihood of the many businesses and restaurants that rely on these employees would suffer as well.”

Despite many expressing concern, Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza said nothing is set in stone.

There was no vote on the issue at Monday’s meeting, and officials said there are still other steps to go through before anything is finalized.
