Area groups trying to keep the elderly from being scammed

WAUSAU (WAOW) It’s World Elder Abuse Awareness month and officials say, 1 in 10 older Americans face some kind of abuse including being scammed.

An event was held Thursday afternoon at the Marathon County Library in Wausau to give tips to protect yourself along with common signs of a scam.

Officials say elder abuse is a big issue. “Elder abuse is a human rights issue and it tends to be a little less recognized than some of the other types of abuse and people tend to be uncomfortable when talking about topics like that” said Brenda Christian, manager of North Central Health Care Adult Protective Services.

Some of those signs include:

-being pressured to act now

-a call saying you won a contest that you didn’t enter

-a large down payment is requested

-asked to wire money or spend prepaid gift cards to a stranger

When it comes to protecting yourself or a loved one from scams, research the business or charity that called, read the fine print, and reconsider the purchase.
