Wisconsinites gear up for free fishing weekend

WAUSAU (WAOW) — The DNR’s Free Fun Weekend encourages new anglers to give fishing a try, bringing in new customers for area bait shops.

Keith Syring, Owner of Riverside Rentals & Bait Shop, said the holiday will likely help his business. “Anytime we get an opportunity to get as many customers in here as we can, that’s always a great thing,” Syring said.

For experienced anglers, the weekend is just another reason to go out on the lake. “I just enjoy getting outside,” said Wausau resident Jess Long. “You’re stuck inside for six months of the year. Why not get outside while you can?”

A fishing license would normally cost between eight and twenty dollars, but on June 1-2, it’ll be free to everyone.

The Free Fun weekend is not limited to fishing. The DNR will also offer free entry to state parks and recreational areas, making for a great weekend with the family.
