Walsh breaks Wausau East Track & Field record, punches ticket to state

The Wausau East Track & Field team has itself a star in the making. Antiana Walsh was anticipated to make a run at state last year, but fell short of a trip to La Crosse because of a late season hip injury.
Walsh prepared to be “the best” this season, taking down legends like Brooke Jaworski.
“I was scared in my blocks shaking going against Brooke, but she’s a really good competitor,” Walsh said.

Walsh has dominated the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

“Our coaches push us everyday and motivate us so we feel like we are the best and we are going to be the best,” Walsh said.

The sophomore set a PR and broke a Lumberjacks program record all at once with a 12.05 finish at Division 1 Sectionals.

“When they announced the times, I found her out in the middle of the field and I yelled out across the track that she had broken the school record; it was pretty exciting,” Wausau East head coach Tim Olson said.

“I was just jumping in the middle of the field–I was really excited,” Walsh said.

The first place finish gives Walsh her ticket to state where the competition is a lot stiffer.

“I’m scared,” Walsh said. “There are a lot of fast people. I know I am fast, but there are more challenges, more people you have to go against, and you have to push yourself even harder.”

Regardless of the outcome, Walsh likes a good challenge.

“We’ve talked next year about moving her up with the guys because the girls can’t keep up with her, so she’ll probably run with the guy sprinters next year,” Olson said.

Walsh is seeded fourth in the 100 meter dash and sixth in the 200 meter dash at state.
