Estimate: Nearly 60,000 pounds of drugs turned in on Drug Takeback Day

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) — Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul says more than 29 tons of unwanted medication was collected during Drug Takeback Day.

Last Saturday, nearly 280 law enforcement agencies across the state collected drugs at more than 460 permanent disposal boxes — disposal sites that are available all year long.

The goal is to keep expired or unwanted medications from being misused or getting into our waters from being dumped in landfills or flushed.

The attorney general’s estimate of 58,408 pounds — or 29.2 tons — is based on preliminary reports. An official weight will be determined before the drugs are incinerated.
