MARSHFIELD (WAOW) — Office Max announced it will be closing it’s doors in Marshfield in the coming months. The office supplies store is the fourth major retail store to announce closures in the city within the last year.
In early 2018, Younkers announced it was closing the Marshfield Mall location. Figi’s announced closures earlier this year. And just this week Shopko announced it’s closing all stores.
In a statement to News 9 Office Max said, “Office Depot, Inc. is committed to helping eligible associates with a severance package and other company subsidized benefits. Also, where possible, we are working with our associates to identify open opportunities in our neighboring stores or in other areas within the company.”
However, the company failed to comment just how many employees will be impacted by the Marshfield store.
City leaders said the news of another store closing was sad, but they’re optimistic the community will bounce back.
“It’s a sad thing for a number of reasons, but the main thing is the employees that work there,” said Mayor Bob McManus.
He said that there are currently hundreds of job openings in the city. He also said the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry has resources available.
When Figi’s closed earlier this year, Development Services Director, Josh Miller, said the city came together to support those employees. In fact, the chamber of commerce was involved in a job fair.
“We’ll get through it… there will be other opportunities for new businesses to come to Marshfield because of that.” Miller said.
