SCHOFIELD (WAOW)– A Wausau area volunteer receives a Jefferson Award.
Sarah Thuot set up Patriot K9s (PK9s) of Wisconsin.
It allows qualified veterans to train their own service dogs–free of charge.
“I love working with the dogs and the veterans,” Sarah Thuot says.
She holds the training in her Basic Dog facility in Schofield.
Many of those taking part have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The 22-week program pairs veterans with their dog or one provided by PK9s.
“Being able to train with my dog as a service dog makes my life easier,” one veteran says.
Training covers basic obedience and adapts to each veteran’s disability.
