WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Viral pictures from a California fire department serve as a notice to central Wisconsin drivers about fire hydrants.
Tuesday, Anaheim Fire and Rescue had to break the windows of an illegally parked car to get access to a fire hydrant. Later that day they posted photos of the incident on their Facebook page. That post had been shared over 13,000 times as of Thursday.
The Wausau Fire Department said those situations add unneeded minutes if they have to respond to an emergency.
“It can take up to several minutes to either clear the hydrant or, if we have to find a completely new hydrant, we have to lay the line a lot longer,” said Wausau Firefighter and Paramedic Shawn Gehring. “So it’s going to take us a lot longer to get water on the fire.”
Gehring added the Wausau Fire Department would only break vehicle windows in extreme circumstances to get to a hydrant.
