Badgers’ Hornibrook enters NCAA transfer portal

The Badgers may have an open competition for the starting quarterback role this spring. Head coach Paul Chryst announced starting QB Alex Hornibrook has elected to leave the Wisconsin football team.

Hornibrook has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Hornibrook went 26-6 in three seasons as a starting quarterback for the Badgers, including a 20-4 record in Big Ten games. His .813 winning percentage is the best of any quarterback in program history. He started nine games as a junior last season, throwing for 1,532 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hornibrook sat out several games, including the Pinstripe Bowl, due to concussion-like symptoms.

Sophomore quarterback Jack Coan stepped in and performed well for the Badgers in Hornibrook’s absence. He played in five games. The junior threw for 515 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. If Hornibrook transfers, Coan will likely battle true freshman Graham Mertz for the starting role. Mertz is a four-star recruit out of Overland Park, KS. He enrolled at Wisconsin for the spring semester to participate in spring workouts.

The Badgers open spring practice March 26.
