Marshfield, Stratford wrestling headed back to state

Stratford wrestling will get a chance to make it a 3-peat at the state wrestling meet in Madison come the first of March.

Marshfield will look to improve on their trip last year, where they bowed out to #3 Stoughton in the quarterfinals.

Both teams earning trips to the state wrestling meet with sectional wins Wednesday night.

Stratford took down Crandon 60-21 in the semifinals of their sectional meet tonight at Auburndale. Then they outlasted Coleman, 33-27.

“Didn’t see this coming. I know we’re both ranked 1 and 2 all year. But they had every guy returning, we literally had five guys returning of our entire roster, and missed a few guys that weren’t in the lineup. I told these guys probably the biggest match of heart I’ve ever seen, up and down the lineup. They worked so hard to get this, and they earned it. They deserve it,” head coach Joe Schwabe said.

It was a little bit more of a comfortable night for Marshfield, who dispatched River Falls 54-18.

The Tigers got dominant performances from their usual cast of characters, including a 35 second pin for senior Sam Mitchell, and another quick pin from Bentley Schwanebeck-Osterman.

“It means everything. It’s such a great experience. Being down in Division 1 individual state is fun, it really is. But being down there with your family, with your team, it’s just a great, great overall experience,” Mitchell said.

The state wrestling meet is Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd in Madison.
