Wisconsin Outdoors: Cross Country Skiing

With all the recent snowfall now is the perfect time to try some cross country skiing.

One of the most popular spots in the Wausau area is the Nine Mile Trail system. Nine mile houses nearly 30 kilometers of trails for cross country skiing and snow shoeing.

The trail system is double tracked for both types of cross country skiers, classic and skate.

“Classic (skiing) is the two tracks side by side where people just move along and stay in those tracks,” Marathon County Parks Operations Manager Andy Sims explained.

“It’s a little bit slower. Skate skiers are a little bit more of a V and they actually actively push themselves along a little quicker.”

Both styles of skiing allow participants to get outside and exercise in a time of year where such a thing is usually difficult to do.

“A lot of people here bike and run, they do a lot of fitness activities,” said Sims. “Quite honestly winter gets boring and this is a great way to make use of wonderful Wisconsin winter.”

The Nine Mile trails chalet, does rent equipment and is open everyday with varying hours.
