WAUPACA COUNTY (WAOW) — A 59-year-old Manawa man has been charged with felony mistreatment of animals in the death of a Great Dane named Gypsy, according to online court records.
Jeffrey Buttles is also facing a misdemeanor obstruction charge.
He made his initial appearance Tuesday in Waupaca County court.
Justin Beese previously told News 9 Gypsy didn’t return home and he began to work. After finding a trial of blood, he called the sheriff’s department.
When confronted, Buttles initially told investigators he shot a coyote, but later admitted to shooting the dog, according to court records. Officials said Buttles claimed the dog was on his property often and was barking and growling at him before the incident.
“Jeffrey advised he placed the dog into his truck and disposed of it in the Little Wolf River,” the document continued.
The dog has not been found. Gyspy’s owner still hopes to find her.
Buttles is currently out on bond.
