Feeling more like December heading into the weekend

Tonight: Gradually decreasing clouds and colder.

Low: 10 Wind: NNW 5-10

Saturday: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny and chilly.

High: 20 Wind: Becoming SW 5-10

Chilly weather settles in to start the weekend.

The low pressure system and cold front have pushed off to the east and colder air is settling into the area. After reaching highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s early this morning, temperatures fell into the 20s by midday. This allowed for any standing water from yesterday’s rain to freeze, creating icy roads, sidewalks, and parking lots.

Any surface that goes untreated will remain slippery tonight, but the snow will come to an end. Clouds will gradually decrease through the night with lows falling to either side of 10 degrees. It’ll be a chilly one on Saturday, but skies will turn partly to mostly sunny. Highs only reach the low 20s. Breezy southwest winds will move in on Sunday, drawing warmer air and more clouds into the area. Highs look to warm into the low 30s.

The clouds and low 30s will stick around on Monday as two low pressure systems move towards the area. There’s uncertainty on whether or not these two systems will phase together as they move through, which would bring the state several inches of snow. Right now, some minor accumulation looks like a good bet. Snow will wind down Tuesday morning except in the far north where lake effect will continue through the day. Temperatures will be much colder, only reaching into the low to mid teens.

The first night of the year looks to be one of the coldest so far this winter as lows will drop to around 5 below zero, with wind chills around -15 degrees. We’ll see more sunshine on Wednesday, but it’ll still be cold with highs in the mid teens. Warmer air will return for the end of next week with highs in the upper 20s Thursday and mid 30s Friday, but right now those days look dry.
