A Rhinelander student nearly struck by truck while getting on the school bus

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WAOW) — Last Tuesday morning on Highway 8 in Rhinelander, a student was seconds away from being hit by a truck.

The driver of the truck went around the stopped bus on the right-hand shoulder. As the student was stepping up the stairs, the truck went flying by. A few seconds earlier and the end result could’ve been fatal.

Audio from the video shows that the child was unaware of what happened, however the bus driver was in disbelief.

“No that car like just missed you,” said the bus driver. “That truck just missed her.

Bowen’s Bus Service’s Manager Kim Weyers said nearly every day there’s at least one report from her drivers stating someone ran a bus stop sign.

“When I saw the video, my heart dropped. I was ready to cry,” said Weyers. “That decision is putting a child’s life in danger. You don’t know where the bus is in the stop. Whether the kids are still on the bus, whether they’re waiting to get on, if they have to cross the road, the stop sign is out for a reason. The red lights are out for a reason. You need to stop or you could be ending a child’s life.”

According to Weyers, law enforcement planned to charge the driver with reckless endangerment upon identification. However, neither law enforcement or Bowen’s Bus Service have been able to find the suspect. The bus driver and bus cameras were unable to get any license plate information.
