TOWN OF DEWEY (WAOW) – Thieves ripped off some valuable batteries in a burglary at Grezenski Forest Products in the Town of Dewey, according to the Portage County Sheriff’s Department.
The owner reported old batteries – worth about $1,000 – were stolen from an unlocked semi-trailer in late April.
"They are six-volt batteries that are used for old tractors. There were about thirty of them," Sheriff Mike Lukas said.
Investigators say the burglars left clues behind: Footprints from one thief were discovered along with tire tracks from a smaller truck that left the driveway on Maple Road and headed north to County Highway X.
Lukas says the thieves will likely try to sell the batteries.
"The possibility of them going to salvage yards and trying to get salvage money out of them or reconditioning them and trying to sell them for antique tractors at shows is very real," he said.
