Brad Hanson joined News 9 WAOW as the Sports Director in April of 2018.

I can't tell you how excited I am to be in Wausau and get the chance to cover such a great sports market.

My road here has been an unconventional one, to say the least. A year and a half into my college career at the University of Minnesota, I ran out of money. So as a way to pay for the rest of my school, I joined the Marine Corps, and spent the next four years traveling the globe.

I was a broadcaster in the Marines, and was primarily stationed in Iwakuni, Japan. From there, I deployed to Afghanistan, the Philippines and Australia.

After my four years of service, I returned to school and graduated in May of 2014. After a summer with the Minnesota Twins radio department as an intern, I took a job as a reporter for KWWL-TV out of Waterloo, Iowa. I was in charge of the Dubuque bureau for three and a half years, where I covered anything and everything going on in that community.

Though I was a general news guy then, I also covered for our sports department when needed. I was blessed with the chance to cover the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl and Pinstripe Bowl, as well as follow the UNI Panthers to Seattle and Oklahoma City in the NCAA tournament. I also got the chance to cover local sports, including football every Friday night during the fall in Dubuque.

Since the day I was put into a journalism course my freshman year of high school in New Brighton, Minnesota, I've always wanted to get into the sports side of things. With this job, that dream has finally been realized.

I'm so grateful and so excited to provide coverage of not only the north central Wisconsin area, but the ever-important Green Bay Packers!

Have a story or know an athlete we should be covering? Give me a shout!
